Vallon des Auffes

other

The Vallon des Auffes is a natural cove in Marseille, tucked beneath the Corniche Kennedy and defined by a sixty-meter-long bridge with three large stone arches. This bridge, built in the nineteenth century by engineer Jean François Mayor de Montricher, spans seventeen meters above the harbor, connecting the cliffs that shelter the port. The name comes from the Provençal word auffo, referring to a type of grass once used by local artisans to craft ship ropes and fishing nets.
