The Pont de la Fausse Monnaie is a nineteenth-century stone viaduct that spans a sheltered rocky cove along the Marseille coastline. Built between eighteen sixty-one and eighteen sixty-four, it was part of a major project commissioned by Emperor Napoleon the Third to extend the Corniche road toward the Palais du Pharo. Below its arches, the cove serves as a natural harbor where small fishing boats, known as barques, are pulled onto an inclined slipway to escape the winds.
