The New Town Hall, or Neues Rathaus, dominates the northern side of Marienplatz with a one-hundred-meter-long facade of intricate stone carvings and neo-Gothic spires. Designed by architect Georg von Hauberrisser, the building was constructed in three major phases between eighteen sixty-seven and nineteen hundred and nine. It replaced the older city hall, which had become too small to accommodate the administration of a rapidly growing Munich.
