Feldherrnhalle

monument

The Feldherrnhalle is a monumental open-air loggia on Odeonsplatz, recognizable by its three soaring rounded arches and the two large stone lions guarding its entrance steps. King Ludwig the First commissioned the structure between eighteen forty-one and eighteen forty-four, intending it to serve as a tribute to the Bavarian Army. Architect Friedrich von Gärtner modeled the hall after the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence, and it eventually housed bronze statues of military leaders Count Tilly and Karl Philipp von Wrede.
