Odeonsplatz

Odeonsplatz is a large, rectangular public square dominated by the Feldherrnhalle, a monumental loggia with three distinctive open arches modeled after the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. King Ludwig the First commissioned the square in eighteen sixteen to serve as a ceremonial northern gateway to Munich, replacing the medieval Schwabing Gate. The site features the Theatinerkirche, known for its yellow facade, and architecturally reflects the Italianate influence that earned Munich the nickname of the Athens on the Isar.
