Karolinenplatz

The most striking feature of Karolinenplatz is the twenty-nine-meter tall black obelisk that rises from its center. Clad in bronze plates, the monument was erected in eighteen thirty-three at the command of King Ludwig the First. It serves as a memorial to the thirty thousand Bavarian soldiers who perished during Napoleon’s Russian campaign of eighteen twelve, when Bavarian troops fought alongside French forces.
