The Cathedral of Saint Denis the Areopagite stands on Panepistimiou Avenue as a neo-Renaissance basilica, distinguished by its three-aisle layout and the formal, geometric precision of its nineteenth-century design. While the building occupies a central spot in the city today, the land for its construction was purchased in eighteen forty-seven when the area was still undeveloped countryside beyond the old Ottoman town.
