Panepistimio is an underground station on Line two of the Athens Metro, named after the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens located just above. When engineers began excavating this site in the late twentieth century, they encountered a massive ancient cemetery from the fifth century before the common era. Construction became a delicate archaeological project, as workers uncovered two hundred and nine graves buried at different depths beneath the modern street. Today, the station serves as a quiet gallery for those discoveries, with ancient lamps, vases, and child burial containers displayed in glass cases along the platforms.
