The Parnassos Literary Society is recognizable by its classicizing nineteenth-century mansion on Saint George Square. Founded in eighteen sixty-five, this institution holds the title of the oldest literary society in mainland Greece. Its origins trace back to the four sons of the numismatist Pavlos Lambros, who established the group while they were still schoolboys. Though young, the brothers leveraged their father’s social standing to quickly build the society’s reputation, eventually drawing the support of leading intellectuals and the Greek state.
