Little Venice is identifiable by the row of grand, eighteenth-century houses that rise directly from the edge of the Aegean Sea, with brightly painted wooden balconies that project over the waves. Known locally as Alefkandra, this waterfront quarter on the western side of Mykonos Town was historically built by wealthy merchants and sea captains who constructed their homes with direct access to the water.
