The tomb of Sultan Shamsuddin Iltutmish is a plain, square red sandstone chamber that sits near the northwest corner of the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque. While the structure appears modest from the outside, its interior walls are covered in dense, intricate carvings of geometrical patterns, arabesque motifs, and delicate calligraphic inscriptions from the Quran. The dome that once covered the building has long since collapsed, leaving the richly decorated white marble cenotaph in the center open to the sky.
