Sassoon Dock is marked by a vintage stone gateway featuring a Victorian-era clock designed by Sir John Bennett. Built in eighteen seventy-five by the merchant Albert Abdullah David Sassoon, this was the first commercial wet dock in western India. It originally functioned as a vital hub for the cotton and opium trade, capitalizing on the maritime shifts caused by the opening of the Suez Canal.
