Gateway of India

The Gateway of India rises twenty-six meters above the waterfront, a grand archway of yellow basalt and reinforced concrete overlooking the Arabian Sea. It features a central dome fifteen meters in diameter, flanked by four turrets and intricate stone latticework known as jali. Designed by the Scottish architect George Wittet in the Indo-Saracenic style, the structure blends Western triumphal arch traditions with motifs drawn from sixteenth-century Gujarati architecture.
