Sassoon Dock

You can identify Sassoon Dock by the old double-arched gateway at the entrance, which is topped by a clock tower featuring a mechanism designed by the London clockmaker Sir John Bennett. Built in eighteen seventy-five on reclaimed land by the merchant Albert Abdullah David Sassoon, this was the first commercial wet dock in western India. It allowed ships to dock regardless of the tide, a feat of engineering that helped the Sassoon family transform Mumbai’s maritime trade during the boom in cotton exports.
