St. Paul’s Cathedral is defined by its exterior of white-plastered walls and its central tower, which rises two hundred and one feet above the grounds. Built between eighteen thirty-nine and eighteen forty-seven, it stands as the first Anglican cathedral constructed in the overseas territory of the British Empire. Major William Nairn Forbes designed the structure in an Indo-Gothic style, incorporating lightweight bricks and polished lime stucco to adapt traditional English Gothic forms to the tropical climate of Kolkata.
