Sapporo Gokoku Shrine

Sapporo Gokoku Shrine is marked by the expansive, quiet green space it occupies directly adjacent to the southern side of Nakajima Park. Established in eighteen seventy-nine as the Sapporo Chukonsha, it began as a site to memorialize the soldiers of the Tondenhei—a unique force of soldier-farmers who lived and worked in Hokkaido to develop and defend the northern frontier during the Meiji Era.
