Hasso-an

Hasso-an is a small, weathered wooden tea house sitting quietly within the Japanese garden of Nakajima Park. Its name, meaning eight-window tea house, refers to the precisely placed apertures intended to create a sense of expansive light and space within a floor plan covering just over two tatami mats. Designated a national Important Cultural Property, the structure is a rare example of early Edo period architecture in a city known for much younger history.
