Nakajima Park is defined by the expansive Shobu Pond at its center, a stretch of water that began as a timber-storage pond in the eighteen seventies. Before the paths and trees existed, this land served a purely industrial purpose, holding logs floated down the Toyohira River to build the city of Sapporo. By eighteen eighty-seven, the lumberyard closed and local residents transformed the area into a park.
