Robatayaki Utari is the oldest robatayaki restaurant in Sapporo, founded in nineteen fifty-four. You can identify the interior by the rows of fish, such as hokke, hanging from the ceiling to dry in the heat of the charcoal fires. A large counter featuring twenty-five seats surrounds the central hearth, where chefs grill fresh Hokkaido seafood and vegetables directly over hot charcoal. The restaurant takes its name from the Ainu word for companion, and the interior is decorated with ornaments and traditional items that draw on Ainu culture.
