Sapporo Clock Tower

The Sapporo Clock Tower is a wooden building with white horizontal siding and a red triangular roof, identifiable by the four-faced clock mounted within its central cupola. Constructed in eighteen seventy-eight, it served as the original drill hall for the Sapporo Agricultural College. It represents one of the few surviving Western-style buildings from the era when the Japanese government sought to modernize the island of Hokkaido with American assistance.
