Janjan-Yokocho is a narrow, covered shopping arcade stretching one hundred eighty meters in the Shinsekai district. While its official name is the Nanyo-dori Shopping Street, the nickname Janjan-Yokocho took hold as the alley gained fame. The name comes from the onomatopoeia for the jangling sound of shamisen and drums that shopkeepers played to draw in customers during the middle of the twentieth century.
