Shinjuku Golden-Gai consists of six narrow, labyrinthine alleys lined with low-rise, wooden buildings that date back to the post-World War II era. While the surrounding area of Shinjuku has been rebuilt with modern skyscrapers, this dense, two-thousand-square-meter block remains filled with over two hundred tiny, shanty-style bars that typically seat only five to ten guests at a time.
