Hanazono Shrine is identified by its vibrant vermilion structures tucked behind the high-rise buildings of Shinjuku. Originally founded before the Edo period, the shrine was relocated to its present site during the Kan-ei era. Its name translates to flower garden, referring to the former landscape of the Owari-Tokugawa family’s estate where the shrine was moved to accommodate a vassal’s villa.
