Kabukicho

Kabukicho is defined by its overwhelming density of neon signs and a street layout that was meant to host a grand cultural tradition that never arrived. Following the destruction of World War Two, planners designated this area for a large kabuki theater to help rebuild Shinjuku. While that performance hall was never built, the neighborhood kept the name, and the site instead evolved into one of the largest entertainment and nightlife districts in the country.
