Mercado 23 is a sprawl of open-air stalls in downtown Cancún, occupying the northeastern corner of the city’s neighborhood 23. Its official name is Javier Rojo Gómez, and it has operated since nineteen seventy-eight, shortly after the region began its transition into a planned tourist center. The site functions as a daily destination for residents who gather here for household goods, fresh produce, and handmade crafts, distinguishing it from the commercialized markets found in the nearby hotel zone.
