The Palacio Municipal in downtown Cancún is defined by its arched facade and a prominent trapezoidal clock, an element added to the building in nineteen eighty. It sits facing the Plaza de la Reforma, serving as the seat of government for the Benito Juárez municipality. When the city was first being developed in the mid-seventies, there was no permanent home for local officials; the first mayor, Alfonso Alarcón Morales, had to take his oath of office in the nearby Parque de las Palapas because this building had not yet been finished.
