Mufu Palace occupies the base of Lion Mountain, featuring massive, tiered wooden halls that climb the hillside overlooking the winding lanes of Lijiang’s Old Town. The complex houses the residence of the Mu clan, which acted for centuries as the power center for the Naxi people who ruled this region as hereditary chieftains. Construction on the current structures took place between nineteen ninety-six and nineteen ninety-nine, following the site of a sprawling mansion where twenty-two generations of the Mu family once lived.
