Large Water Wheel

Two massive wooden water wheels stand prominently at the entrance to the Lijiang Old Town in the Gucheng District. These wheels rotate slowly beside a traditional screen wall, marking the threshold where visitors enter the ancient city. They are locally known as Kongming Wheels, a name derived from the legendary Three Kingdoms period strategist Zhuge Liang, to whom the design of these historical irrigation machines is often attributed.
