Red Sun Square is centered on a prominent, fourteen-meter-tall statue of Mao Zedong, one of the few of its kind to survive in China from the nineteen-sixties. Built in nineteen sixty-nine, the monument stands as a striking landmark in the Gucheng District of Lijiang. Its design is dense with symbolism; the height of the statue, its base, and the platform are calculated to represent significant dates, such as the founding of the People's Republic of China in nineteen forty-nine and the date of the Communist Party's birth.
