Huqing Yutang, located on Dajing Lane, is recognizable by its expansive, traditional Jiangnan-style architecture, which stands out as a rare, preserved commercial complex from the late Qing dynasty. Established in eighteen seventy-four by the influential merchant-official Hu Xueyan, the site was constructed at a cost of over two hundred thousand taels of silver. This was twice the amount Hu spent on his own nearby mansion, reflecting his ambition to create a pharmaceutical powerhouse that could rival the famed Tongrentang in Beijing.
