The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is recognizable by the six slender minarets that surround its cascade of domes. Commissioned by Sultan Ahmed the First and completed in sixteen sixteen, the building was designed by the architect Sedefkar Mehmed Agha to reassert Ottoman imperial strength. Its interior walls are lined with more than twenty thousand handmade ceramic tiles from Iznik, which are decorated in floral patterns and shades of blue that earned the structure its popular name.
