Hurrem Sultan Hammam

The Hurrem Sultan Hammam is recognizable by its long, symmetrical stone and brick exterior, stretching seventy-five meters between the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Completed in fifteen fifty-six, this bathhouse was commissioned by Hurrem Sultan, the powerful wife of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. It was designed by the celebrated imperial architect Mimar Sinan and occupies the site of the ancient Byzantine Baths of Zeuxippus, a location that layers Ottoman civic life directly over the ruins of a classical predecessor.
