Hagia Irene is a large, domed structure of brick and stone located within the outer courtyard of Topkapı Palace. It holds the title of the first church built in Constantinople, commissioned in the fourth century by Emperor Constantine the Great. Long before the nearby Hagia Sophia took prominence, this site functioned as the primary cathedral and the religious heart of the Eastern Roman Empire, potentially hosting the Second Ecumenical Council in three hundred eighty-one.
