Dean Bridge is a four-span sandstone arch bridge that rises more than one hundred feet above the Water of Leith. Designed by the celebrated engineer Thomas Telford and completed in eighteen thirty-one, the structure carries traffic over a deep gorge, connecting the New Town to the western suburbs of Edinburgh. Its design features hollow piers, an innovative technique used by Telford to reduce the overall weight of the massive masonry.
