The Gatehouse of Edinburgh Castle is recognizable by the two bronze statues standing in niches on its facade, one of King Robert the Bruce and the other of Sir William Wallace. Built between eighteen eighty-six and eighteen eighty-eight, this structure was designed in secret by R. Lawson Scott to replace a far simpler entrance. Military authorities at the time feared public reaction to such a bold, Scots Baronial style intervention, as the castle previously featured only an unspectacular palisade and a jumble of buildings.
