George IV Bridge is an elevated street in Edinburgh that spans the Cowgate ravine. Stretching three hundred meters, this multi-arched stone thoroughfare was designed by architect Thomas Hamilton to provide a level route between the Old Town and the southern districts. Construction began with the laying of a foundation stone on August fifteen, eighteen twenty-seven, and required the demolition of older streets known as Old Bank Close and Liberton's Wynd.
