White Horse Close is an enclosed courtyard defined by its distinctive cluster of crow-stepped gables and external stone staircases. Tucked off the Canongate near the foot of the Royal Mile, it contains the remnants of the seventeenth-century White Horse Inn. While the site is often associated with the royal stables of Mary, Queen of Scots, the name likely comes from the inn itself, which served as a primary departure point for stagecoaches traveling to London.
