The Vennel Viewpoint Edinburgh Castle

The Vennel is a narrow public staircase of roughly fifty stone steps that cuts between two buildings, rising from the Grassmarket toward Lauriston Place. Its name comes from an old Scottish term, derived from the French word venelle, meaning a lane or alley between structures. While it once served as a practical medieval throughway, the passage is now recognized for a specific vantage point at its upper landing, where the narrow stone walls frame a direct, unobstructed view of Edinburgh Castle perched upon its volcanic crag.
