Dean Path corkscrews down into a steep, wooded gorge, marking the original approach into the historic milling settlement of Dean Village. Settled in the twelfth century, the area takes its name from the word dene, meaning a deep valley, which was carved over millennia by the rushing Water of Leith. For eight hundred years, this riverside corridor powered as many as eleven grain mills, serving as an industrial hub for the bakers of Edinburgh.
