Royal Mile

landmark

The Royal Mile is the primary thoroughfare of Edinburgh’s Old Town, identifiable by the series of narrow, steep alleyways known as closes that branch off from the main road. It stretches almost exactly one mile from the volcanic rock of Edinburgh Castle at its western end to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in the east. This route serves as a spine for the city, connecting medieval history with royal authority.
