Arthur's Seat

natural

Arthur’s Seat is a craggy, extinct volcano rising two hundred and fifty-one meters above the city of Edinburgh. From several angles, the mountain’s rounded contours and rocky outcrops resemble a lion couchant, with the Lion's Head and Lion's Haunch forming its distinct profile. While it dominates the landscape of Holyrood Park today, the hill was formed by volcanic activity approximately three hundred and fifty million years ago and was later molded into its current shape by moving glaciers.
