Canongate Kirkyard

Canongate Kirkyard is identified by the sight of ancient stone monuments huddled around the seventeenth-century Canongate Kirk on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Established in sixteen eighty-eight, this burial ground provided a final resting place for local citizens for over two and a half centuries. It holds the graves of figures such as the economist Adam Smith, whose work laid the foundation for modern economic theory, and the poet Robert Fergusson.
