South Bridge

South Bridge is a road bridge spanning nineteen stone arches, yet it is almost entirely hidden from view by the buildings lining its sides. Only the largest arch remains visible where the street crosses over the Cowgate, leaving the rest of the structure concealed beneath shops, offices, and tenement houses. Completed in seventeen eighty-eight, this bridge was designed to connect the Old Town with the expanding southern suburbs, forcing a path directly through one of the city's most densely populated quarters.
