John Knox House

The John Knox House is distinguished by a timber gallery that projects over the High Street, a signature feature of Edinburgh’s medieval architecture. Built in the late fifteenth century, the house is a rare survivor from a time when the Royal Mile was lined with similar timber-fronted mansions. While it bears the name of the Protestant reformer John Knox, who may have spent his final months here in fifteen seventy-two, its original identity belongs to James Mosman, a goldsmith who crafted jewelry for Mary, Queen of Scots.
