Friends of Jerry Garcia Amphitheater

The Jerry Garcia Amphitheater is a Greek-style outdoor venue defined by a stage backed by a series of vertical concrete troughs arranged in a partial hexagon. Opened in nineteen seventy-one within the hilly terrain of John McLaren Park, it was originally built as a multi-purpose municipal project. For decades, the structure remained largely underused and nameless until local neighborhood groups from the Excelsior district campaigned to honor Jerry Garcia, the Grateful Dead frontman who grew up nearby on Harrington Street.
