The Avenue Theatre on San Bruno Avenue is marked by a prominent marquee and vertical neon sign that rise above the neighborhood's commercial corridor. Designed by the Reid Brothers, the theater opened on July twentieth, nineteen twenty-seven, as a hub for the Portola District. It was built for the Ackerman and Harris circuit and originally offered a stadium-style auditorium with one thousand seats.
