The Upper Great Highway Promenade is a two-mile-long expanse of paved roadway that tracks the edge of the Pacific Ocean between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard. You can identify this space by the broad, flat stretch of asphalt that sits directly against the sand dunes and the ocean, separate from the surrounding neighborhood grid. Originally designed in nineteen twenty-nine as a scenic boulevard for motor vehicles, the road surface now serves as a dedicated public park and walking path.
