Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach stretches for three and a half miles along the western edge of San Francisco, distinguished by its wide, sandy expanse and the lack of high-rise buildings along its shoreline. While it now offers a quiet retreat from the city, the area was once an experimental landscape. In the late eighteen hundreds, entrepreneur Adolph Sutro repurposed retired horse-drawn streetcars into a makeshift community called Carville, where people lived in streetcars that cost twenty dollars apiece.
