Battery Bluff

Battery Bluff is marked by four historic gun batteries—Blaney, Baldwin, Slaughter, and Sherwood—that emerge from the hillside above Crissy Field. Built by the United States Army between eighteen ninety-nine and nineteen oh two, these concrete fortifications were designed to defend the San Francisco Bay with guns capable of hitting targets twelve miles out at sea. The site remained under military control until nineteen twenty, when the batteries were decommissioned and left largely undisturbed for decades.
