The Olympic Club is the oldest athletic club in the United States, established on May 6, 1860, by twenty-three charter members. It began in the backyard of Gold Rush-era artists Arthur and Charles Nahl, who organized gymnastics workouts for their friends. While the club maintains a historic City Clubhouse on Post Street, this Lakeside campus was acquired in 1918 when the struggling Lakeside Golf Club went up for sale.
